CONSUMER ROTATION
The
Nigerian Government with other organizations and individuals are making
collective efforts to safeguard the interest of consumers in the country. A
final user of any product or service one called consumer of that product or
good. Consumer protection as an aspect of consumerism is a device adopted by
Government and organizations of safeguard consumers’ interest.
LAWS PROTECTING CONSUMERS.
(a)
Sale
of Goods Acts 1893 – Made in England but adopted in most
countries including Nigeria. The law provided that consumers take possession of
goods bought without problems, it should perform as promised and conform with
any description of the product.
(b)
Using
laws – Those that fix interest rates on loans. That the weakness
of the consumers should not be used to exploit them. In Nigeria, these laws are
enforced by CBN, which is the apex and regulating bank.
(c)
Hire
purchase Act 1975 – Made to spell out the rights and
duties of the hire purchaser and seller from cheating and exploitation.
The
Act provided that the case price and hire purchase price be shown to the
customer to choose. It also provided that if the hire purchase pays up to the
cost, the seller should not reclaim the article except through a count order
among other provision.
(d)
Price
Control Decree of 1977 – This is the amended one of 1970.
This decree brought about price control board set up to regulate price of
certain goods in Nigeria after the civil war.
(e)
Food
and Drug – This was promulgated to regulate the manufacture,
sale and advertisement of foods, drugs, cosmetics and other related products.
The federal Government created the dept of food and drug in the health ministry
to enforce the provisions of this act in 1970 over the functions of this
department.
(f)
Standard
organization of Nigeria – Established by a decree in 1971
to standardise method and products of industries throughout Nigeria and to
ensure compliance with Government policy on standardization.
